Rockets Project Information and Directions:


Rockets Project Information and Directions:

Save your notes from the WebQuest. You will need them for the final project report.

Everyone needs their own project packet. Make sure you read it all.
  • Put your name on it!
  • Read the whole thing.
  • You will be filling in the notes, questions, calculations and more as you build the rocket. 
  • Bring the packet to class every day. 
  • Everyone will have to write up their own project report (in their own words) and turn in the packet. 
  • Reports will be due by the Final Exam.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to start the report. You can work on it as you go through the project and then just finalize it after the launch. 

Rocket kits go into box top with paper with all team members' names.
All equipment gets returned to the front of the room (glue, tape, rulers, etc).
  • Make sure tops are tightly closed on glue.
  • X-Acto knives get signed out and returned to me. 

Read all of the instructions carefully before starting any building of the rocket.


Tentative Launch Date: (it is better if you are done earlier and we launch earlier, in case of rain)
Wednesday, May 23rd. Rain date is Friday, May 25th.

Rockets WebQuest

This WebQuest will help students gain an understanding of rockets and rocket flight, how physics fundamentals are related to rockets, and how we will use model rockets.
 
1.    go to http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/rocket/index.html and read the page.

2.    click on “Guided Tours” on this page


3.    on the “Guided Tours” page (http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/rocket/guided.htm ) go down the page to the “Rockets” section. You need to go through each section:

Take notes on each page you visit. Your notes will be graded as the first part of the Rockets Unit. Pay particular attention to the “Model Rocket” section of “Types of Rockets.”

You will be calculating a predicted altitude for your rockets before launch, and then we will see who's is the most accurate.

Schedule:

We will start the Rockets project on Friday, 5/4 ( May the fourth be with you)

Monday 5/7 - go over homework and Rockets project.
(no class Wed due to early dismissal)

Friday, 5/11 ->  Rockets project (different than one Physics class does. You will have to do more construction) You will need to move quickly on the project.
Target launch date is Wednesday, 5/23 with a rain date of Friday 5/25.


Final Exam: Tuesday, 5/29 during period 7 class time. Exam will be on every topic since start of year (do not panic)

Assignment for Friday, March 30, 2012


I'm still out sick with bronchitis. Here is  your assignment for today, Friday. Have a good weekend.

No more than 3 people in a group.
One paper per group.


Geometric Optics Lab

1. Go to http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/geometric-optics  and run the simulation.
 Take the pencil and raise it so that the eraser is sitting on the principal axis. Click on the “principal rays” button.

1.1 Draw the ray diagram. Describe the three special principal rays: how do they enter the lens, and how do they exit the lens?
1.2 There are several properties of the lens you can change in this simulation. For each one below, PREDICT what you think the effect will be on the image (its size, location, and brightness), then give the actual answer:
a) Radius of curvature of the lens
b) Refractive index
c) Diameter
1.3 You can change the location of your object (the pencil). Drag the pencil so that it is farther away from the lens. Explain the result.
1.4 Drag the pencil so the eraser is right on top of the focus. Draw the ray diagram. A) What happens to the two principal rays that enter the lens? B) Will they ever form an image?


Turn in your answers and observations at the end of the period, even if you are not done.

Attention - Important notice about AP Exams and FEES !!




Dear AP Students,

Monday, 3/12/2012, the school received word that the Federal government has slashed its funding to states for AP exam fees and the State of Connecticut is not providing any increase in their funding either. 

Because of these cuts, you will have to share the costs of the exams. Again, you will have to pay for part of the exams this year. 

The costs are as follows:
  • $15 per exam for the first three exams
  • $53 per exam for the 4th, 5th, 6th or additional exams.
So, if you are taking 2 AP exams, it will cost you $30. If you are taking 4 AP exams, it will cost you $98
( 3 x $15, and then $53 for the 4th exam).

A letter will be sent to your parents about this change in AP testing and fees. 

If any additional funding becomes available from the Federal or State governments, refunds could be given, but there is no definite notice of that happening. 

We know this may be a hardship for some students. This is not a Bridgeport thing, it is due to Federal and State cuts.

Student Contest on Energy - cool prizes - see me to enter


eesmarts™ - an energy efficiency learning initiative

eesmarts 2012 Student Contest


The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund has announced its eighth annual eesmarts energy efficiency student contest inviting students to enhance their skills in science, writing and technology. Students are asked to answer grade level-specific prompts regarding efficient and renewable energy technologies in a variety of formats including a poem, a news article, an essay and a television commercial.

The contest is open to all Grade K-12 students in Connecticut and all essay prompts align with the Connecticut State Frameworks in science, mathematics and writing.

All participants receive recognition for their submissions and winners will be honored at a special awards ceremony on May 22, 2012 at the State Capitol.

Write a letter to your principal about what you and your fellow high school students can do to address the problem of climate change in your high school. What actions can you take to reduce the school’s carbon
footprint? Be sure to include a comprehensive carbon footprint reduction plan, including the installation of energy efficient technologies (example: lighting, boilers, air conditioning), renewable energy sources, recycling, transportation and energy conservation behaviors (example: turning off unnecessary lights).
